Employee Spotlight On
Jim Bertelsen
Supervisor, Transmission Engineering

What is your job and what do you like most about it?
I have worked as a Transmission Line Design Engineer at Dairyland’s Admin. Building for over 17 years. I value the collaborative environment at Dairyland, and the cross-departmental teamwork required to successfully deliver transmission line projects. In my role specifically, I enjoy the problem-solving and innovative approaches each project demands; no two projects are ever the same.

What led you to work in this field?
I went to school for Civil Engineering, so the plan was to be a Transportation Engineer. After graduation, I expanded my search and came across an opportunity at Dairyland. My girlfriend at the time, now wife, is from La Crosse, so she encouraged me to apply. Transmission Design Engineering is not a degreed discipline, so I was intrigued by the opportunity to learn something new.

Why do you think Dairyland is a great place to work?
The people, collaboration across many departments, being part of a smaller community (I'm from St. Paul), and I can call people when I need something, they usually pick up the phone.

What about life outside work? Tell us about your favorite things.
My wife and I have three kids, ages 14, almost 10 and 8. I have been the Director of Coaching at Mississippi Valley Soccer, based in La Crescent for the past 10 years. In this role, I coach a lot and help support many of the youth programs. I also coach hockey for two of our kids at West Salem. My wife coaches our girls in volleyball. So, our "free time" is dictated by youth sport schedules.
