Dairyland is collaborating with longtime environmental stewardship partner Raptor Resource Project to install a live-streaming osprey camera alongside the osprey nesting platform on Bunyan’s Island, which is within the Dairyland Reservoir (Ladysmith, Wis.). Dairyland’s Flambeau Hydro Station water-powered plant operates on the Reservoir. As part of our commitment to being a good neighbor in communities where we do business, Dairyland supports environmental enhancements in and around the 2,000 acre Reservoir.

Dairyland member, Jump River Electric Cooperative, installed the original platform on the island; Jump River also donated and assisted in the installation of the new camera pole. 

Dairyland Environmental Biologist Ben Campbell recently met with John Howe and Amy Ries of the Raptor Resource Project to facilitate installation of the camera, microphone and receiver on a pole next to the osprey platform. Personnel from Dairyland’s Telecommunications and IT departments worked together to install an additional receiver on a tower leading to the Flambeau Hydro Station. 

Due to the pandemic, supply chain issues have delayed delivery of the camera’s solar panels and battery components, both of which will provide the power source for the camera. Once operational in spring 2022, the camera will provide real-time online viewing of the osprey on Dairyland’s website, just like our existing Peregrine Falcon Bird Cam. “We are excited to bring this new nature education opportunity to bird watchers, students and the general public by Earth Day,” said Campbell.
