Commuters passing by Dairyland’s Genoa Site along Hwy. 35 will notice demolition activity on the main building of the retired 345 MW Genoa Station #3 (G-3) coal-fired power plant. Dairyland’s main contractor for the G-3 decommissioning and dismantlement (D&D) project, Veit Co., has commenced demolition activities on the turbine hall portion of the plant.

Final phase milestones are in place for the D&D project. Prior to its 2021 retirement, G-3 provided safe, reliable power to the region for over 50 years.

Key dates: Implosion of the boiler house and 500-foot G-3 stack is scheduled to occur in April 2024. Information regarding safety, road closure and coverage of the event will be shared in March 2024. Full D&D project completion is expected in November 2024.

Future plans: Dairyland remains committed to supporting the economic vitality of the Genoa area. Commerce opportunities for reuse of the closed power plant site are being explored as part of our G-3 Site Redevelopment and Reuse (R&R) project. Benefits and risks of each option, such as short-term barge leases, are being evaluated for long-term sustainability.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Dairyland has contracted with Alter Metal Recycling to recycle the remaining estimated 14,000 tons of heavy metal steel scrap materials to date from the facility demolitions. In addition to recycling, Dairyland is also reusing materials whenever possible. For example, concrete from the stack structure, foundations and slabs is being repurposed as gravel at the Genoa Site.
