Dairyland's Flambeau Hydroelectric Station crew and Environmental Biologist Ben Campbell hosted students from Bruce and Ladysmith (Wis.) High School biology classes recently on the Dairyland Reservoir to share a hands-on lesson on water quality, invertebrate and fish sampling techniques.

Along with the local biology class teachers, Campbell and Flambeau’s Dennis Arendt, Dee John Dupee and Harley Ripke guided students through sample collection and the process of making an ecological assessment of the water quality and biological data of the Reservoir.

Flambeau and Environmental staff have hosted this educational opportunity annually since 2013, with the exception of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Flambeau Hydro Station plant tour portion of the event remained cancelled. Instead, Arendt “walked the students through the plant” by describing the water-powered facility’s operations.

About Flambeau: The water-powered Flambeau Hydroelectric Station, located on the Flambeau River five miles northeast of Ladysmith, has been generating clean, efficient electricity since 1951. Throughout the year, Dairyland welcomes area residents and visitors to enjoy the many recreational opportunities available on both the Dairyland Reservoir and the public land surrounding it.
